Choosing the right addons and extensions

in Categories: Developer Tools, Tips and Tricks.

When you think about browser(s), visual studio code (vsc), WordPress or Drupal for example, they all come with thousands of installable addons, extensions and or modules.

How do I choose the right ones?

This is more like a common knowledge, but it’s here to ease up your choosing process, when you are about to install some additional functionality to your web browser, your code editor or your web site.

There are few things to look at:

  • When was it last updated, so you know it’s being maintained.
  • How many times it has been downloaded and installed, compared to similar addon, extension or module.
  • Usually the addons, extensions or modules are rated with (five) stars.
  • Extra: Documentation is always good.

So if it has been recently updated, it has plenty of downloads (thousands, hundred thousands) compared to similar addons or extensions and if the rating is good, usually somewhere around or above three stars. Then it’s safe and a good idea to download, install and use that addon or extension.
